MOTIM Műkorund Kft. is a Hungarian manufacturer of electrically fused minerals used in abrasives and refractory applications. With over 90 years of experience and around 200 employees, the company supplies various industries and exports its products to more than 30 countries.
The biggest challenge: the efficient processing of this extremely abrasive material. Corundum, with a Mohs hardness of 9 to 9.5, is one of the hardest minerals in existence. This is where IFE's proven processing technology comes into play – a partnership dating back to the 1970s. Through years of development, IFE has optimized wear protection for MOTIM, ensuring maximum machine lifespan.
White corundum
an indispensable, highly abrasive raw material
MOTIM produces high-quality white corundum at one of its plants, which plays a key role in numerous industrial applications. It is used as:
- abrasives, lapping, and polishing agents
- wet and dry micro-blasting media
- component in ceramic and resin-bonded grinding applications
- base material for refractory products
The process is divided into several precisely coordinated steps:
- Raw material logistics & preparation: High-purity calcined alumina is delivered and prepared for the melting process.
- Melting & cooling: The material is melted in arc furnaces, then cast into blocks and cooled.
- Crushing & grinding: After cooling, the material is first crushed using jaw crushers and then further ground. The crushers are fed by IFE vibroconveyor technology.
- Transport & screening: IFE vibroconveyors and screening machines are used to transport the material and classify it into the desired grain sizes.
- Magnetic separation: IFE magnetic separators remove metallic abrasion from the product stream.
- Packaging & shipping: The processed corundum powder is filled into bags and prepared for global export.
Conveying technology for smooth transport.
Numerous IFE vibrating feeders and tubes handle the material transport and feeding within the plant. Since corundum is very hard, conventional conveyor belts are unsuitable. The rubber abrasion caused by contact with the material cannot be reliably removed.
Screen classification for precise grain sizes.
IFE linear vibrating screens with unbalanced motors classify the material after crushing into various fine fractions. Grain sizes above 10 mm are returned to the crushing cycle, while the other fractions are directed to the next processing steps. Only spring steel panels are used in all screens. The metallic abrasion can easily be separated in later steps using IFE magnetic separators.
